Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band, formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. Earliest influences included Free, The Yardbirds and The Beatles. "Free Bird," a massive hit of today and yesteryear, was released on their first album, (pronounced 'leh-'nerd 'skin-'nerd). Another still popular song by the band is "Sweet Home Alabama," which was a spirited, spiteful response to Neil Young's "Southern Man."

Several members died in an airplane crash in 1977, including lead vocalist and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006. The remaining members still play.
